Памятник-барельеф Вагифу Мустафазаде в Баку

About / Baku

Baku

The city that gave Vagif his music — and today carefully keeps his memory.

Home city

The Baku that raised him

Vagif Mustafazadeh is a child of Baku. The cosmopolitan, musical, open city shaped his ear: here mugham and jazz, East and West, sounded side by side. This very Baku blend became the soil for his art.

Today Baku answers the musician with memory: a house-museum, a monument, a school and a street in his name remind us that the great pianist was, and remains, one of Baku’s own.

House-museum

The room where music lived

Baku has a house-museum of Vagif Mustafazadeh. His personal belongings, photographs, posters and records are kept here — the atmosphere of the home where mugham-jazz was born.

For admirers from all over the world it is a place of pilgrimage: a chance to touch the world in which the musician lived.

Memory in stone

Vagif at the piano — forever

The monument shows Vagif at the piano — as he was known and loved. Inscriptions in Azerbaijani remind passers-by that the founder of mugham-jazz is honoured here.

It is part of how Azerbaijan keeps its geniuses — not in textbooks but in the city’s space, beside its people.
